WEST MILFORD — Senior guard Mike Otero made a three-pointer with two seconds to play Saturday to propel fourth-seeded West Milford to a 65-63 victory over fifth-seeded Passaic Valley in the quarterfinals of the Passaic County boys basketball tournament.
“Mike was struggling throughout the game and he was getting frustrated,” West Milford coach John Finke said. “But we wouldn’t really want anyone else shooting the ball at that time. That’s his third game-winning shot this year.”
Otero finished with 12 points for West Milford (15-5), which also got 16 points and seven assists from senior point guard Noah Basket, 15 points from senior swingman Tom Pegel, and eight points and nine rebounds from senior center Pat Burke. The Highlanders will play top-seeded Eastside in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Kennedy.
Junior guard Jihad Wright scored a team-high 21 points for Passaic Valley (16-5). Sophomore guard Tito Ramirez added 19 points and senior center Shawn Ulrich had 12 points and eight rebounds.
KENNEDY 58, WAYNE HILLS 44 (at Paterson): Junior guard Alphonso Gee scored all 22 of his points in the second half to lead the second-seeded Knights into the semifinals.
Senior guard Jevon Rawl added 11 points and seven assists for Kennedy (14-7), which will play third-seeded Wayne Valley in the at 1:45 p.m. Saturday at Kennedy.
Senior guard David Torres scored 22 points for Wayne Hills (7-14), which was denied in its bid to become the first No. 15 seed in the 44-season history of the Passaic County tournament to make the semifinals. Junior forward Joey Kenny added 10 points and 15 rebounds for the Patriots.
EASTSIDE 66, DEPAUL 33 (at Paterson): Senior forward Shakur Juiston scored 16 points, sophomore guard Nhazir Smith added 15 and senior guard Asem Johnson contributed 13 for the top-seeded Ghosts (15-5).
