Montclair Kimberley Academy senior Josh Chery (23) fights through two defenders for a loose ball during the Cougars’ 73-62 loss to Morristown-Beard in the New Jersey Prep B semifinals Sunday in Morristown. Chery had a game-high 26 points for the Cougars.
A week after teammate Josh Chery reached the career 1,000-point milestone, Montclair Kimberley Academy boys basketball senior point guard Kevin Brown did the same with a 10-point effort in Tuesday’s 90-71 defeat to East Orange.
Brown is averaging 15 points a game for the Cougars this season, while the 6-foot-4 Chery – who led MKA in scoring with 29 points Tuesday – leads the team with 20.
Those two Cougar standouts also carried the offensive load this past Sunday, with Chery scoring 26 points and Brown adding 20 in a 73-62 loss to Morristown-Beard in the Prep B semifinals.
Kelly Curran added 8 points for the Cougars (9-12, 2-10 SEC-Liberty), who will host Newark’s American History tomorrow night (Friday, Feb. 20, 7 p.m.).
Looking ahead, the Cougars will be the No. 9 seed in the upcoming NJSIAA North Jersey, Non-Public B state sectional tournament. They’ll face a familiar foe – eighth-seeded Newark Academy – in the first round on Wednesday, March 4, with the winner facing the overwhelming task of playing at top-seeded St. Anthony in the sectional quarterfinals March 6.
