Sophomore Cameron Lipton-Martinez scored a season-high 17 points and Josh Allen added a double-double (12 points, 15 rebounds) as the Montclair High School boys basketball team cruised to a 50-28 win over Science Park Saturday afternoon.
Meanwhile this week, Montclair learned its seed and matchup in the upcoming NJSIAA North 1, Group IV state sectional tournament: the Mounties are the No. 10 seed in the 16-team bracket and will visit No. 7 Union City in the first round on Monday, March 2.
MHS has already won two games this season at the Soaring Eagles’ gym, having reached the championship game of the Union City Holiday Tournament in December. One of those two wins was a 71-64 win over the hosts in the semifinal round.
The Union City-Montclair winner will advance to the sectional quarterfinal to play either No. 2 Paterson Eastside or No. 15 North Bergen.
Saturday’s win over Science Park was a nice bounce-back for the Mounties (11-10, 4-6 SEC-Liberty), two days after suffering a heartbreaking 59-58 overtime loss to Bloomfield Tech last Thursday.
The Spartans defeated MHS for the third time this season, rallying from 10 points down at the end of the third quarter. Allen had 22 points and 15 rebounds, while Tahlik Summers scored 17.
Tuesday, Lipton-Martinez had a team-high 15 points in a 59-48 loss to Newark West Side.
Montclair is at East Orange tonight (Thursday, Feb. 19, 7 p.m.) before hosting its home finale Saturday afternoon, 1 p.m., against Roxbury.
